Our class took a huge technological leap forward this week by incorporating 3D printing into our learning. Last school year we began learning 3D modeling skills by using BuildwithChrome.com and our hard work payed off when our friend and colleague Mr. Merrell so graciously loaned us his 3D printer for the week, and we've maximized every minute with it. We've learned so much about design and engineering while planning and printing our architectural plans, imaginary hybrid creatures, abstract sculptures, and so much more. After our awesome initial experience students are already creating plans for future designs.
In addition to learning about design, we'v also learned about the technology involved with 3D printing. How different filaments work, what temperature the extruder needs to be at, and much more. I make it a point to explain as much of the process of bringing our projects to fruition as possible from the functions of our class kiln to where colors for paint come from. Although 3D printing isn't a nearly everyday occurrence in our world yet, I have no doubt that it will be soon be, thus our lesson in 3D printing truly is preparing students for their future.
